The Origins of CrossFit Irvine started in the garage of owner Robert Van Der Heyden in 2008. Missing the team atmosphere he experienced in college sports, he was set on his dream of opening a CrossFit gym
How were you introduced to CrossFit?
CrossFit Marina is where I did my first CrossFit workout, and a mother of three SCHOOLED me. I was heartbroken and had a lot of self doubt. She came up to me and told me to stick with it. That was the definition of fitness I wanted. One year later I opened my gym in my garage, and in early 2009 we moved into our first actual gym. My mission in life has always been to help people. We practice and teach CrossFit because we believe in the methodology.
What makes your culture and community unique?
I always say that CrossFits are like mom and pop coffee shops. Each shop brews their coffee in different ways. There are a few things that make us different here at CF Irvine:
- First and foremost is our experience, you can’t purchase 8 years of coaching. It takes time to mold how you see people move and change their movement for the better.
- We cater to people who have families and want to stay healthy.
- We welcome people who are hesitant to try CrossFit because they are afraid of getting hurt. Our main goal is to show them that that fear is unjustified, and if they give us a chance we will prove them wrong.
- We have a very close niche OHANA feeling here.
When joining crossfit irvine, we want you to know that your goals are our priority and that each individual goal is going to be different.
What gear do you recommend to your members?
For everyone that does not do enough wrist strengthening work, I recommend wrist wraps. Also, knee sleeve for anyone who is coming repetitively because of the volume of work that you do from squatting, jumping, etc.
