CrossFit Brit opened its doors in 2012 in the sunny city of Irvine, CA. WODshop interviews owner and head coach, Sham Cortazzi to find out more about his gym and members.
Sham came a long ways from London to fulfill his lifelong dream of opening a gym. He states, “I have always wanted to have a gym since I was 14 … they say that America is where your dreams can come true and I did exactly that.”
Cortazzi has been doing CrossFit for over 10 years now! He began as a personal trainer in London, specializing in olympic lifts and kettlebell movements. He found CrossFit through the internet and was astonished when he saw a video of a male AND female each doing 50 unbroken pull-ups. One thing led to another and he started doing CrossFit himself. About 2 years later he got the opportunity to receive his certification.
What do you love about CrossFit?
In CrossFit, you have a huge range of things that you are always working on. There is always something you can improve on, and being constantly challenged can make you a better person. If I can be a better person and make other people better, then I feel like I am contributing to making the world a better place.
Describe the culture of your gym:
We want your health to be as important as your job, as your spiritual development, and your family. You only have one body and you have got to work on it! Not only by having positive intentions, but also by doing the work. My gym is a place where that can happen.
What makes CrossFit Brit unique:
We have an amazing coaching staff, our members are fantastic, and we have fun while we work out. If you enjoy yourself and have a good time, you are more inclined to come back again.
What gear do you recommend to your members?
I’m always surprised when people complain about their hands tearing, when all you need to do is get some good protection. We highly recommend the JAW hand grips. Also, functional clothing makes a big difference when you are working out. No one likes to make uncomfortable adjustments during your workout, and if your buying the right gear you don’t have to do that.
